A heat pump is a device used as an energy saving measure for home and business owners, they work by absorbing heat from the outside of your home for use indoors for heating radiators, hot water and underfloor heating systems amongst other things.

These energy saving devices have two main types - Air source heat pumps, also known as ASHP’s and Ground source heat pumps, also known as GSHP’s, depending on where the heat is absorbed from.

Air source heat pumps take heat from the air outside your home in a similar way to how a fridge takes heat from its inside and can extract heat from air even when the temperature is as low as -15. Installing an air source heat pump could lower your fuel bills and even provide you with a small income through government schemes. Once installed air source heat pumps they can provide your home with heat and hot water going forward, need little maintenance and can totally negate the need for fuel in your home.

Ground source heat pumps extract heat from the ground using pipes buried in your garden, they circulate water and antifreeze around a pipe in a loop called a ground loop. Heat is absorbed into the fluid and into the pump via a heat exchanger. Heat pumps can be used to provide heat all year round, even through the coldest winter. The longer the loop, the more heat is absorbed but also the more space is need to bury the piping. Ground source heat pumps could save you money on your fuel bills and can offer you an income through government schemes and in the same way as air source heat pumps they need very little maintenance
